How to Connect Vrbo to Booking and Airbnb: iCal vs API, the Complete Guide

Running Vrbo alongside Airbnb and Booking? We compare the two sync methods (free iCal vs a channel manager API) with the real delays and risks.

If you are already on Airbnb and Booking and considering Vrbo to increase your exposure, you are right in principle: Vrbo captures 15 to 25% of vacation rental searches in France, particularly among families and North American guests.

But the technical question deserves attention: how do you sync 3 platforms without multiplying the risk of double booking?

Why connect Vrbo (in numbers)

Before the technique, the why.

If you only sell on Airbnb and Booking, you typically miss 15 to 25% of the French vacation rental market depending on your segments. For a property making €16,000 a year on Airbnb and Booking, adding Vrbo typically brings in:

€1,500 to €3,500 / year
Additional revenue through Vrbo for a property making €16,000 a year

That is the equivalent of 2 to 3 extra months of rent without changing the property, the cleaning or the prices. Provided, of course, that you do not kill that gain with double bookings.

The 2 methods to connect Vrbo

Method 1: iCal sync (free)

This is the default option when you start out. Each platform generates an .ics URL that contains its calendar, and the other platforms read it at regular intervals.

iCal setup Vrbo ↔ Airbnb ↔ Booking:

  1. In Vrbo: My account → My properties → Calendar tab → "Export my calendar"
  2. Copy the .ics URL
  3. In Airbnb: Calendar → Sync → "Import a calendar" → paste the Vrbo URL
  4. Do the same on the Booking side: Rates and availability → Calendar sync
  5. The other way around: grab the iCal URL from Airbnb and the one from Booking, and paste them into Vrbo

You end up with a triangular sync made of 6 links: Vrbo→Airbnb, Vrbo→Booking, Airbnb→Vrbo, Airbnb→Booking, Booking→Vrbo, Booking→Airbnb.

The problem:

  • Each link polls every 30 minutes to 2 hours
  • 6 links = 6 points of failure
  • Cumulative delay: a Vrbo booking can take 2 to 4 hours to show up on Airbnb if the polling lands badly
  • Statistically, the more platforms you add, the more the risk of double booking grows exponentially

Method 2: API sync through a channel manager

All the professional solutions use the official APIs of Vrbo, Airbnb and Booking. In practice, your channel manager connects directly to each platform and syncs in real time (under 30 seconds).

How it works:

  1. You create your account on the channel manager (Smoobu, Lodgify, BedLink, Amenitiz, etc.)
  2. You connect your Airbnb, Booking and Vrbo accounts through OAuth or API keys
  3. The channel manager becomes the central authority: it distributes availability to each platform
  4. An incoming booking on any channel immediately blocks the date on the others

Advantages over iCal:

  • Sync in under 30 seconds (vs 30 minutes to 2 hours)
  • No links to maintain
  • Mirror listing creation is possible (no need to recreate it by hand on each platform)
  • No single point of failure: if Vrbo is down, it does not affect Airbnb↔Booking

Cost: from €14.99 per property (GuestLucky Pro) to about €88/month for 3 properties (Lodgify Professional). At BedLink, €51/month for 3 properties, with setup done for you at no charge. Prices checked on August 17, 2026 on the official pages.

Which channel managers support Vrbo?

Almost all the major channel managers support Vrbo through a direct API:

The right order of activation

If you are not on Vrbo yet and want to add it cleanly:

  1. Choose a channel manager that supports Vrbo through an API.
  2. Connect Airbnb and Booking first (the accounts you already have). Check that sync works properly for 1 week.
  3. Create your Vrbo account (if you have not yet). Allow 1 to 2 hours to create the listing.
  4. Connect Vrbo to the channel manager.
  5. Test with a fake internal booking on Vrbo (a date 6 months out) to check that it blocks properly on Airbnb and Booking. Cancel it afterward.
  6. Go live publicly on Vrbo.

Counted generously: 2 to 3 days of work if you do it alone (Vrbo account + channel manager setup + tests). 5 to 7 days if you delegate to a service with setup included.

The classic trap: starting Vrbo without API sync

This is the mistake I see most among hosts. They activate Vrbo through iCal "to see if it works", and 2 to 3 months later they have a double booking in peak season. Cost of a double booking: between €300 and €1,200 lost (penalties + cancellation + a negative review).

Simple rule: if you want Vrbo on top of Airbnb and Booking, treat the channel manager as a fixed cost from day one. The ROI is positive from the first double booking you avoid.

A service with setup included for all 3 platforms

If you do not want to deal with the configuration:

BedLink handles the connection of Airbnb + Booking + Vrbo (and 60+ other OTAs if relevant to your case) through a direct API. Listing mapping, pricing, Stripe payments, direct booking website: everything is set up for you in 5 to 10 days.
